#1 Color Challenge

I will put up the COLOR CHALLENGE POST up EACH WEDNESDAY for the next 12 weeks.
Think we can come up with that many colors?

I'll offer a COLOR once a week for you all to play with.
I will be using just one style of block and focusing on the Color palette I list with in that block.

You are welcome to use any block style you like or use the block below.

In your block, use the color FABRIC you start off with,
and some MADE FABRICS you select to make the color look more desirable! Try different ideas when you select your colors to go with the color of the week... break out! try anything, and you can evaluate your block afterwards...
Think of them as little cooking experiments... A little of this a dash of that... and see what you can do to make it LIKE ABLE. ;-)

Think about:
How you relate to the color combo?
Does it bring up negative icky thoughts.
Why do you dislike to colors, OR Why do you like them?
What fabrics did you find brighten them or Highlight them.
After you've made your block do you still dislike or like the color combo.
Did  it inspire a new palette for you to work in?
Can you see the colors in a new light with new possibilities?

Please post your blocks, and write a bit about any of these thoughts above... Tell us if you discovered anything or any other color combos during your experiment... You can cut from your stash or use all scraps from your bins...
Here's our First COLOR!

MAUVE....  or a Mauve-ish kind of color is the first weeks challenge... Do you even have a piece of fabric in your stash this color? Someone sent me this piece of fabric and I have it a "not so desirable" bin in my studio. I didn't have a fabric CUBE of folded fabrics remotely close to this color! LOL!  You may have to dig in your OLDIES to find this color...

This color was so popular in the early 80's, and it still leaves a bad taste in some people's mouth...  It has a lot of GRAY and Blue in it, and is rather Dull. So The first fabric I pulled was a print I found that has some similar colors and I used that to instigate my next color choices.

Something darker in the same family of colors, something Brighter, something similar and just something HAPPY!  Polka dots!  I cut a swatch off each piece of fabric, hacked it to bits, and

Made some fabric.... starting off with the undesirable fabric in the center. I then chose a back ground fabric that I will use through out my quilt...(maybe something just as challenging... Chocolate Brown)
yum.

Cutting measurements for this  block if you choose to use it...

4 -  3 1/2" squares brown
2 - 3 7/8" squares cut in half diagonally brown
2 - 3 7/8" squares cut in half diagonally  starter fabric

1 - 6 7/8" square cut in half diagonally brown
1 - 6 7/8" square cut in half diagonally made fabric

So. Do I like that MAUVE better now?   Yeah, it's not so bad... I like the mixture of the different prints, and color balance...  I Love the Godly Yellow with it in a very strange sort of way...  and I think the Bright pink with yellow dot saves the whole thing! The chocolatey brown I will use in every block going forward...
Would I go out and buy me a bolt of mauve?  mmmm, no.  But how will it look with Next weeks color?  Well now... that, is yet to be determined!

Make, play, experiment, POST!  Can't wait to see what you do with MAUVE!

Yikes... Do you have a Pantone number for this color? It looks terra cotta/peach on my screen. Thank you! This is going to be a series of challenges!

I agree with fiberchick - looks like terra cotta. But I think I have the idea. The brown does it justice and the pink makes it nice! Thanks for the challenge!

Oh, we all know MAUVE! It's the closest I had to mauve.... LOL! It does read orange next to the brown... light keeps changing how it looks see the grey'd out color on the second photo... with the grey...

Oh no - mauve!! I have very clear memories of this color from the 80's and I may have banished all of it from my stash. When you say challenge you mean it - LOL! This will require looking into the dusty recesses of my purples - may be a bit moldering there - LOL!

Looked in my stash (for a while) and eventually found a fairly revolting mauve. Now to see what modern fabrics are brave enough to join it.

Godly Yellow. You had me there.

Ug Mauve? You really know how to get people outside the comfort zone! Haha. I'll see what I can dig up. I'm having a flash back just thinking about what mauve reminds me of . . . . it isn't pretty.

Will look through my stash tonight ... sadly, this was one of the focal colors in the sampler quilt from my first machine piecing class . . . oh, how things have changed since then!!!!!!

omg mauve - that is the ONE color that Stacy and Clinton (from What Not to Wear) say looks bad on everyone! haha good challenge V!

OOOH, I want to do this! I didn't think I would have any mauve--my stash is pretty small-- but lo and behold, apparently I inheirited some from my grandma! We'll see what happens...

This is so funny! A friend just gave me 5 yards of MAUVE. She said it 'so wasn't her COLOR'. I was going to use it to pull together the 50 million 3.5" nine patches I have...I might have to think about pairing it with the 'godly yellow'...

I guess I'll be playing this weekend. I found some mauve.

Fun challenge! Don't know if I have mauve, but I'll go hunting deep in my bins.

I like your block. Its going to be fun to make a color challenge quilt with it! OK, I searched and did not come up with anything mauve, except within a floral print that I think I bought a yard sale when my friend was trying to pare down her mother-in-law's stash. Next problem for me is going to be deciding on the overall background color.

I know I have lots of mauve in my attic. Just been waiting for it to come back in style!

A question for you guys; mauve is a colour for which we don't have a Norwegian word. It looks like a dusty pink on my screen. Would that be right?

I guess I am the odd one out. I actually like mauve, but then I tend to like working with grayed out colors. This will be fun. I hope I get a chance to put something together this weekend. Now chocolate brown? That is a color I am not really fond of. That would be a real challenge for me.

What a cool idea. I hope you're doing this long enough for me to jump in on one. I'm enjoying my zen sewing time, and your work always inspires me. :)

oh boy, i love that i am seeing this almost 2 years later...but i am going to do it - i love 'weird' colors and i actually don't see a color on this list i don't like! looks like another quilt for 'the list' ! (:

jodydeschenes said...

ok so i just spent a mindless hour (or two?) on the floor digging through my 'mouse sheets' (tiny scraps) and made piles of some of these colors (yes, i have some of each) and more 'weird' colors i thought of in the process...and i actually already have an idea for a quilt...now only need to figure out how (?) i could squeeze doing it into the ridiculous 'to-do' list of my life!

jodydeschenes said...

ok, Mauve, done...i'll post in flickr. i know this is not REAL '80's mauve', but it's all coming straight from my scraps and this is as close as i can get - kind of more rose. i decided to use this challenge to finally get the Wonky Cross quilt into existence - i am going to use scraps in the challenge color, then add crosses in a 'complimentary' hue - my experiment with 'making the undesirables' look...'better'. already kind of cracking me up...but i love the idea (:
