You all are the most creative people I know-----

One would think dogs and quilts only mix on my blog, but not so Grasshopper.......

I received in the mail today, a box full of dog show ribbons.  Dutch has won his share of his own ribbons over the years, and Bonnie Doon won hers.  They are all safely stowed away in their scrapbooks.  These ribbons are for playing!

These are from the South Carolina Show Circuit and my Swissy friend kept all the leftover ribbons fro the whole year.  And there are a lot of them.

Now I need exciting thoughts on what to do with them.  They are 8 inches long and 2 inches wide and all sorts of colors:   red, blue, yellow, copper, green, grey, purple, rainbow even for Best in Show.    Some are one color some are stripped with white to designate special winners.  Of ribbon material, not grosgrain but the shiny ribbon.  And have the show date, city and kennel club info along with the class information like Winner's Bitch.......that is my favorite one! LOL.  I can say it in public on the dog show circuit!

Anyway.  here are pictures and I have........oh..........like 200 or more of them!

So any ideas?  I want to do some raffle donations with them for April at the Regional Specialty.  I usually do a quilt with a Swissy on it, but this year can be different!

glen:  send me those ideas and get creative!

These are great! How about sewing them all together and making a quilt, rail fence or log cabin style?

Oooh, how creative! I was immediately thinking rail fence, it would be a shame to cut them up! And I would thing if you cut them they may fray quite a bit, but how about weaving them into blocks ?

My first thought was a dog quilt with the ribbons as the border.
Or Dog blocks with the ribbons as sashing.

I left a comment earlier but it obviously didn't show up.

Thanks for the discussion, and for the site address. I would have never thought of traditional blocks! Wow.

I thought today also about appliqueing them to blocks. I need to experiment I guess.

glen: thanks! If you think of anything else, let me know!

i'd worry about them fraying, so would probably go the 'ticker tape' route - and simply machine applique them onto another fabric to form the quilt top, with gaps in betweeen, forming a pattern. Or i suppose you could 'quilt as you go' again onto a backing, which might reduce the stress on the individual ribbons. they are such lovely colours, and full of meaning for you... oooh, have fun!

You can find ribbons used in antique crazy quilts and I think you could have a lot of fun piecing crazy blocks using your ribbons and creating a modern take on this traditional idea.

Here is a detail photo of a crazy quilt which had lots of ribbons (from events) in it. There is also a photo of the whole quilt, but unfortunately the resolution isn't great enough to be able to find all the ribbons.

Dresden Plates made from the ribbons would be cool and I could imagine sewing the ribbons together without cutting them into wedges to minimize the opportunity for fraying.

How about picture frames for thos 8x10 "Winners Bitch" photos? I am planning one as soon as I can bear to part with my girls ribbons.

I'm late to the conversation so you may not see this input but I like the idea of a "piano key" border of the ribbons around whatever you choose to do for the body of the quilt. I've also seen several antique crazy quilts with ribbons incorporated into them. Crazy blocks with dog print patches maybe?
