Here's what I had sewed together before the Dragon went into hibernation.
Here's what I started working on.
The leopard/ochre strip is on its way to being a piecy, scrappy border. The "crown" bit on top is going to be paper pieced points (just as soon as I figure how to paper piece them. Any helpful links?)I'll see what happens next!

Gwen Marston has a "spikes" technique that is not paper-pieced. You take two rectangles and allowing for the eventual fold, sew on a near diagonal. Fold open, press and trim to a rectangle again. Make several and then sew the resulting rectangles together. This gives you spikes with one right angle at the bottom.
Much more liberated than paper-piecing!

If you just draw it out, (not curved) it's very easy to follow...
Beautiful striking quilt! Thanks for sharing. I have some dragon motif fabric and have struggled for a while with how to deal with it. I like the way you used the fabric colors, but not as a center block. I'll have to pull out my dragon again and take another look.
Lovin' the colors, can't wait to see how the crown turns out...I'm going to have to check out the spike technique and the curve technique too!!
