October Scrapbee

Really enjoyed playing with this block and looking forward to making more when I have the time and get back to my stash! I've been thinking about a modified grandmother's fan block for quite some time. I made a regular fan quilt for my mother, reproducing one my grandmother made for her when she married my father. I think spending all this time with her over these past months made this block stick in my head. When choosing your fabrics please use mostly bright colors, no cream, white or black. You will need a scrap of black for the corners.When you pick your contrast color, I'm looking for a highly visible contrast.

 Using your made fabric, cut an 11" square. From your contrasting fabric cut a square the same size.

Lay the contrast fabric on top of the made fabric and cut across both layers through the diagonal. Also cut a diagonal 3" up each side from the corner. Set aside the other triangle set for now.

Make 4 cuts through the fabric as shown. If you want to make more, go for it! No need to measure, they don't have to be the same size. 

Separate the strips so you end up with 2 new wedges. Sew them together.

If you haven't sewn these kinds of pieces together, it helps to have about the same amount of excess on each side. The pieces will line up nicely and there will be less to cut away later.

Once the pieces are sewn, line up your ruler and trim off the excess. Cut a 3.5" square of black fabric and mark through the diagonal with a pencil. If you want to wing this step, go ahead. I needed a place of reference so I picked 3.5" to work with.

Slide the fabric so the edges meet and sew along the marked line. Press the black fabric and you'll have the block! You can cut away the excess underneath the black triangle or leave it. I just left mine in.

There you have it! You will still have another set to play with. I decided to choose another contrasting color and was going to wait till it was done before posting but thought I should get this out there right away. Can't wait to see what you come up with!
