Scrappy Pennies

First it was the heat, this week I had a summer bug or something, so still doing lap projects for now.
Last month I made a penny with wools, from a new pattern I made. I wanted to try it in fabrics, so this was the perfect project to use scraps from my basket.

I wanted a scrappy antique look, so just grabbed fabrics and started cutting and sewing them on. This will be a present for a swap I am doing, so I used walnut and java spray to antique it.

I decided to make some matching birds to go with it. I took scraps and sewed them together, in a crazy quilt style.
Then I made templates with freezer paper and cut out the shapes with that. I did one dark side and one light, so she can use the side she likes best. This is a quick and easy method to make ornaments as christmas gifts, you can use cookie cutter shapes or simple applique shapes in your books.

These are lovely! I would be very grateful if you could tell me what walnut and java spray is, I don't think we have that here in England.

The product I use is called Tsukineko walnut spray.
They do have it in java, which is black and other shades.
I buy the bottles with a coupon and then water them down.
