Learning

With a little bit of free time, I hand dyed some fabric..my first time doing this, and something I've been wanting to try for quite some time.  (That's making fabric, right?? <grin>)

These colors are a bit brighter than my norm, but I do like the way they marbled/mottled.  They are fat quarters.

I had a couple small  pieces of fabric leftover, so I rolled them up, wrapped them with string, and poured the leftover dyes over them, and I got these two small pieces of tie-dyed fabric to play with too!

Have fun everybody!  Deb

Lovely...especially the leftovers! Have you noticed how often the happy surprise is even better than what you plan!

I would love to know the technique and maybe a how to on this. I have dyes and fabrics, and the chemicals, just been afraid to try on my own.
I love your site, I am a fairly new quilter, but not traditional in any way. I use patterns, but change it up to suit me. I like to do everything differently! :)

Coloring with dyes is similar to coloring with paints - except fabric is much more multi-dimensional! Congrats on your learning experiment!

Oh, Deb. You need to check out the quilt university class on dyeing. She is wonderful! I learned so much.

And when I had my rainbow of fabrics dyed, I grabbed them all up, took them to show and tell at one of my guilds. I stood in front of them at show and tell and said, with a straight face, I am dyeing. I wanted to show you all these great fabrics, because I don't know how much longer I will be able to keep doing them. Meaning it was messy and time consuming and I didnt' have the place to do all this dyeing work.

There was a hushed silence. I am thinking they were just awestruck that I had done this fabulous work. And finally one man in the far back of the room broke the silence and said, We are really sorry you are ill, no one knew it. Are you going to make sure your stash goes to the charity group?

I had to break the news to them that I was actually healthy, but just DYE-ing.
