BOM's Everywhere...I finally started mine...

Hi everyone, its the end of the year...and it seems like so long ago that I posted the tutorial for the Courthouse Block.  Anyway with a bit of fabric inspiration, and an evening of 15 minutes plus...I started making some of the Blocks from the tutorial...I hope to try about 5 or 6 of them, by the time I'm done.

I actually did a Queen V (bumblebeans), I cut up absolutely lovely fabric into pieces and mixed them in with some scraps.  Oh what an exhilerating feeling...

So here are some pics from start to finish...a little more than 15 minutes.  More like 2 1/2 hours.

The Neighborhood Is Growing

As I was making these house blocks today I wondered, " Why are these so much fun to do?"

Any thoughts?

(For me I think it reminds me of those summers long, long ago

when I used to amuse myself by designing clothes for paper dolls!)

A Magenta Block

A few days ago Ellen posted some 5 min flowers

she fashioned from scraps.

This gave me the idea for a block which I was having trouble designing for a challenge.

It had to read "magenta". (Not one of my favorite colors.)

Thanks Ellen. Do you prefer one over the other or shall I give it another go?

More Decisions & Progress

Trying to come up with an idea to complement my setting blocks ...

Really liked this block & thought it would make a good-looking border.

But then this project would never get finished ... too labor intensive.

Maybe it will work as a single setting block?

Decided it wasn't working & substituted a solid.

This is what I've decided upon for the border ...

still need to figure out the corners ...

maybe I can use my funky block somehow?

Fruits of Summer Play

I don't think I've shown my crumb blocks here yet... I started making fabric earlier this summer, and made a fair number of these blocks in my playtime. It's great in between projects activity, for when I want to sew without putting a lot of planning time into it... and I like the serendipity of the result! I made a few more fo these, now this is turning into a fair sized little quilt. I am going to be adding more red setting sqaures, good thing the quilt I have these laid out on is red, so it gives an idea of what it will look like. I'm kind of liking the quilting for it too. I'm enjoing this so much, I think I might let it grow a little more before I finish it!

My Wild Side

I've been playing with novelty scraps this week, doing Karen Griska's Block-of-the-Month for Empire Guild. They just kept on climbing into V's block, too. Couldn't stop 'em.

As I was doing the blocks below I saw things I didn't like but taking a seam ripper to those tiny stitched seams was not an option! Covering paper with fabric was a first and I don't think I would/will choose those size rectangles if I tried/try again. Yes, it's that addictive!

Made four blocks of fabric: 4.5 x 11.5

Then sliced & diced and sliced & diced

And sliced & diced some more

Someone asked the size of my blocks. They are 4.5".

It was good to hear that a white ground was important as I had considered other colors.

I will use the comment about a thin gray shadow line below the blue one in a future project.

Above are some possibilities I rejected ... thought you might like seeing them, too.

I will be using the layout with the horizontal strips shown in yesterday's post.

That was the one I thought I would choose because I liked its graphic look.

Inspiration...

I have been so very inspired by all the ideas of making fabric, that I stole a few minutes last weekend--I made these out of my scraps. Can't wait to determine what I'm making out of them, but I'm making them 6" unfinished and am toying with different ways to set them. Just got to tell you that I love what you all are doing with bits and pieces!! I found this to be quite liberating and fun!! I'll be back with updates as I put some more blocks together.
