Patty's heart!
I took 15 minutes to play last night and made this little heart piece just in time for the deadline! I just went to my scrap bin, gabbed the red. I saw some turquoise pieces and gathered those too. I had a scrap of white laying on the sewing table so I used that to stamp the heart then got to sewing. After I hem stitched all the pieces thru the batting and backing, and zig zagged the edges, I decided it was too plain. I decided to splash it with some watered down paint and this is the result. I now have it hanging on my design wall along with many pieces I have collected from other quilters. ~ Patty A.

Compartments of the Heart
Here is my mini heart quilt~
This was a fun quilt to make. The curves proved to be a bit of a challenge
especially since I was determined to keep each orange section as one piece. The sections were a bit wrinkly when the block was finished (more than I am comfortable with), but thanks to the iron and many quilting lines this was dealt with!
IMPROVISED/IMPERFECT HEARTS
Finally I got some semi decent photos of my challenge-not great but at least you can make it out.
[sorry about the camera strap]
The detail shot shows the truest colors-it looks better in person if I do say so myself, as the textures really show up!
I continued to play with the decorator wrinkly fabric for both the hearts and the white background.
I used lots of techniques in this one and have been trying to stick to my CREATE-ive mission for 2014!
I loved the redwork that Sophie (Sophie Junction)was doing so I decided to do some handwork on my piece.
I had forgotten how much I enjoy it!
I had fun, learned stuff , had to troubleshoot and find solutions to little issues that popped up along the way.
In the end it turned out nothing like I had planned but I like it!

Atria & Ventricles
After working in the Texas Medical Center for decades, the word “Heart” brings forth images of four chambers, a regulator for circulation. No romantic image, but a muscle that will beat a bit faster when the right person is smiling.
This is a 12” square, all cottons, piping around the heart chambers, raw edge appliqué for the triangles and a double layer of batting, I think the double layer (sometimes a layer of flannel with a layer of batting) makes it hang a bit better on the wall.
Cheers to all, Elizabeth White

SNEAK PEEK
I had some issues with my camera today so I am showing just a corner of my quilt!
Stay tuned-there will be more in the next few days!
Willa's Play
42 Years and Counting!
My husband's ears perked up when he heard about this challenge, so I decided to make this heart for him. He loves green; I love purple, so I made the fabric/heart. The heart looked pretty plain so I sliced the heart/background fabric, and attached the cream fabric to the black with a gold zigzag. The re-positioned heart represents us as we have changed over the years. I also ended up with a little pocket with a frayed edge, again a nod to the years. I added the trinket for the pocket, but still wanted more fun. So I made the chains of hearts on the heart. I also added batting behind the heart and stitched around the heart with a transparent thread to puff out the heart.
I talked with my LQS owner who suggested mounting it on a stretched canvas that would stand when I said we already had so much stuff for our walls. Unfortunately the canvas isn't deep enough to stand independently. Wonderful husband suggests we hang it like a picture. ~ Willa D.

Heart Challenge
Here's my heart so far. I really enjoyed picking out my favorite reds for this challenge. I was going to cut my heart freehand but decided to go "grade school valentine style" and folded the fabric in half and then freehand cut it with the rotary cutter.
This is my first try hand applique (it's in progress). Since it's not perfect, I may look for a way to disguise it with ribbon and other embellishment. I am sewing it on by hand because the applique got all wonky and squished when I machine stitched on my "word" project.
I never thought that I would like hand sewing but I am! It's one of those things I said I would never do, but I have a hexie quilt in the works (and it's fun although I don't understand why). I am now even willing to finish a quilt binding by hand!
I may miss the end of February deadline but I will finish this and share it.
Kudos to Victoria for giving us the kernel for projects that push us to try new techniques and develop skills.

Fixed-Finished-Sent
Hoping everyone is warm and safe.
This mini is on its way to another sister-in-law
celebrating a birthday this month.
I wonder how many folks are as lucky as I am
and have four fabulous sisters-in-law?
2014 is the year I make each of them a little mini for their birthday.

Puffy Heart Valentines for Friends
For the hearts challenge, I started with some made fabric rectangles, cut them into 24 half-heart shapes, sewed them into hearts, added backs, then stuffed them, embellished them, added pin backs and have mailed them to a some friends.
Scrappy Heart
This is at flimsy stage so far. I am considering making it into a cushion as I have enough of the border fabric to make the back of a cushion. Another great way to use up my crumb blocks.
Playtime
When my plans for today
were unexpectedly cancelled,
I sat down at my machine for some fun.
I've been wanting to make another heart mini.
This is what was developing when ...
... I noticed something poking out over the top.
After stopping & turning it over-
how funny!!!
Now a little seam ripper action is in order,
don't you think?

Ninja hearts!
Hello V
My Mum gave your book to me for Christmas and it lead me to your blog - the Hearts Challenge inspired me so here is my first attempt at "Made Fabric". I have two sons who are into Martial Arts and I made them Ninja quilts for Christmas. These are some of the scraps made into Ninja Heart pillows (quite small), with a free motion spiral quilted on just the heart. It was so much fun - thanks for the inspiration!
I have to also add that the main thing I loved about your book was that it was like cookery book that explains how to cook rather than just a bunch of prescriptive recipes. I know I am going to have a lot of fun with this technique!
Many thanks, Gill, London, UK
I've been getting the nicest emails from people lately, you guys are so awesome! I love seeing what you've made! ...So, Please, please keep sending me pics! ~ V

Helen's heart! updated!
It grew and it is now finished! A seam at the bottom of the last stage was bothering me, and after re-reading your book (“stay away from 90 deg angles”) I unpicked a bit and added in a triangle of another fabric and I’m much happier with it now! The finished piece incorporates some of my favourite things – lots of red, a sawtooth border (loved the one of the quilt on the cover of your book) and feather quilting.
Thanks for a great challenge
Cheers for now,
Helen in the UK

Heart Wreath!
HEART WREATH
My contribution to the heart challenge is a heart wreath.
But it was so much fun that I couldn’t stop!
And now there is another one titled: “You made my heart sing”,
and 2 mug rugs from the rest.
Greetings

pink heart
I spent a very happy 3 hours yesterday playing in my red and pink scraps and created this little piece for the challenge.
I'm usually very controlled when it comes to piecing, but this time I really embraced the 'play' aspect and because none of it was precious fabric I had a blast just cutting and stitching and if a bit was too short, just stitching another bit on until it was big enough. I might leave it as it is and make a mugrug, or add a border of half-square triangles and 'play' some more. My mood next time I can play will determine how it progresses. - Helen in the UK
